Ghost of a prom date

It's prom night and Mary Sue is all excited because her big time crush Jimmy has asked her to the prom. She gets all dressed up and leaves the house to meet Jimmy at the prom. She has been dreaming of this night for the longest time, and doesn't even care about the slight drizzle of rain that is falling.
Mary Sue gets into a bad car accident and never makes it to the prom to meet Jimmy. She is killed and misses her dream date.
To this day, on prom night, a ghostly car can be seen driving the same route that Mary Sue drove.
Or the ghostly figure of Mary Sue is seen standing by the side of the road.
Or the ghostly figure of Jimmy is seen pacing back and forth at the accident site.
I can't tell you how many different times I have heard this story, both from highschool and college. Each community seems to have it's own version of it, but it is pretty much the same plot.
What versions of the story have you guys heard?

Some guy was driving down the road late at night, during a semi hard rainfall. He notices a girl standing in the rain. He pulls over asks if she needs a lift and she says yes. So she is in the car and giving directions to her home. She introduces herself (anyname i'm not sure we will say Stephanie) not much or little conversation takes place after that and finally they arrive. She thanks him and leaves the car, but just as he is about to drive off he looks at the car seat and sees that she had left behind her scarf. He looks out to call to her but she is gone. Thinking she went inside he got out of his car, walked up to the door and nocked. A middle aged woman opens the door. He says "Hi, I gave your daughter a ride home just now and she left this in my car." just then her face went white and looked Puzzled.
He notices this and then asks her if she has a daughter by the name of Stephanie, she says she had but she has been dead for a few years, now the guys face turns a pale white and asks to see a picture of her daughter. Sure enough she shows him and she is wearing the same scarf.
(Well thats the way I heard it anyway

Aurelia, you are probably right, a simple story that has been twisted through the generations of telling it.
When I was in College in Johnstown, PA, we spent a Halloween searching for the grave of the girl. We did end up finding it, but that was about all we found, a headstone, no spirit or anything else. It was quite a disappointment.

Commercialism has indeed destroyed the meaning of most holidays......thats why we have a responsiblity to enlighten folks on the original meanings and histories of our holidays

Did anyone know that the original jack o lanterns were made out of turnips?
