"Spirits, spooks, ghosts and souls. Call them what you’d like, but they’re out there. At least Brian Leffler thinks so.
You swear you turned that light off, right? And those footsteps down the hall — just your imagination.
But Leffler says that somewhere, deep inside, we all know it’s more than our imagination. We’re just afraid to admit it.
Leffler leads the Northern Minnesota Paranormal Investigators (NMPI) and not only does he believe in ghosts, he’s seen them, felt them and heard them.
“I like Halloween way better than Christmas,” Leffler said. “It allows publicity for the real stuff.”
Leffler has lived in two haunted houses, one in McGregor and one in Chisholm. These homes are what ignited his curiosity in the paranormal.
But it doesn’t have to be the house that’s haunted. Leffler said spirits can be attached to people, objects, land and homes. “It can be a grandchild that they are holding on to, or an antique object, or there could’ve once been a massacre on the land you’re living on. … You never know.”
The NMPI are a grass-roots team of investigators from all over the Northland. Leffler’s wife Rhonda is part of that team. In passing, Leffler mentions his wife is a psychic. He says it like he would say, “She’s a dental hygienist.”
The team uses the crudest of equipment, so as not to be accused of digital enhancement. When on an investigation, usually at night, they arm themselves with a 35 mm camera, infrared video cassette recorder and a standard tape recorder. “I don’t allow digital on my cases,” Leffler said.
He does this because the evidence would then only exist on the computer — not in raw evidence like tapes and videos. The team gathers evidence during the most active time. “If a place is haunted, it’s haunted 24/7,” he said.
On any given day, the Leffler home looks like anybody else’s home. His wife cooks the evening dinner, surrounded by cookie jars and refrigerator art. Their two boys run in and out of the house on their way to play with the neighbors. But downstairs, in a dark basement corner, Leffler sits among stacks of video and cassette tapes — loaded with paranormal events.
The collection includes infrared videos of floating apparitions, three-dimensional orbs and glowing objects, and tape recordings of spirits saying they are bound to the place they are haunting or asking their ghost children to walk into the light.
Leffler says he doesn’t get scared. He knows that all the ghosts were just people once. In fact, he said he is more afraid of some people than he is of ghosts. “Ghosts can’t do anything to hurt you. Sure they might be able to gather enough energy to trip or hit you, but that’s all,” he said.
NMPI investigates up to 50 cases a year. All over the Iron Range and into the Twin Ports, Leffler and his team have been asked into homes. But there is one place NMIP has yet to be invited to.
“I would love to get into the Glensheen Mansion,” Leffler said. “It would be a landmark investigation.”
Glensheen’s director, Wade Lawrence, said Glensheen’s official stance is that, there are no ghosts at the mansion. “I don’t want to associate Glensheen with the paranormal or Halloween,” Lawrence said.
But a number of Glensheen workers, former and current, sing a different tune. There are reports of a woman in blue, wandering the second floor — crying and speaking in a Scandinavian tongue. Volunteers have turned off all the lights, only to find them back on, and they claim to have that base-of-the-skull feeling that they are not alone.
Other places in Duluth Leffler would like to investigate include Denfeld High School, the new Central and East High Schools, Morgan Park Middle School, the University of Minnesota Duluth and Charlie’s Club in West Duluth.
Leffler said people would pay big bucks to have a paranormal experience at Glensheen, or anywhere else. “The paranormal is not as taboo as it used to be,” Leffler said, citing popular TV shows that hunt ghosts and showcase haunted places. “There are thousands of dollars to be made,” he said.
But Leffler isn’t getting in on any of that money. The NMPI members are all volunteers; they do it in the name of research. “We’re trying to perpetuate the study of the paranormal,” he said.
Leffler has proven, to himself at least, that ghosts are real, but he said you have to have your own experience to really form an opinion.
If you think you have a ghost problem, call NMPI at (218) 778-0279 or e-mail kreguns@yahoo.com.

oooh oooh I know a famous person!! hehehe. Great article KRC. THanks for posting it up Caesar. Oh and krc, its not so much them hurting me that really scares me (although that does) its jumping infront of me when i least expect it. Appearing at night, touching me and i cant see anyone doing it etc etc, all those things would have me jumping out of my skin! Dont think my poor heart would cope with that lol. I must admit, since being a part of ghostvillage for a fair amount of time has made me understand spirits and accept their presence easier. I probably dont fear the paranormal as much as i used to. I think we grow up to believe ghosts are evil (too many kids spooky shows i think) So we have this fear until we realise jsut what Brian (krc) is quoted to say, they too were just people. And that they mostly are just trying to communicate with you.

Thanks again for the great article and THANKS GV Villagers for opening my eyes !

Well I hope thats true, Cuz I'm just learning myself to accept the things I CANNOT change. Glad to know that "they" can't hurt me... BUT I don't like the fact I get a surprise visit, feeling etc...
Guess I'm Still spooked some.

Ya know, it's funny. I am getting calls from all over wanting us to come check out their haunted locations. Some from a couple of hundred miles away. This article was the best one, I thought, that was done for all the papers...there were 4 different articles that I am aware of. It was a crazy Halloween, I did three different radio shows as well as the nightly news. Drove my wife nuts....er. It was a good day and I am glad that you have enjoyed the article. Thanks Ceasar for posting it up here for people to read.

Oh yeah...I was glad to get a good plug in there for ghosvillage too!

Good Job Brian!! Now to get the investigations rolling for the group!! (hopefully this time I will be able to make it though! LOL) Well don't worry Bri, I am going to be moving yet again, so maybe my next place will be a great spot to hit up for a lil vestigatin! Lol. Oh, forgot to inform you all, that I now have a new companion in my bed at night. My 5 yr old was yelling at Johnny, our spirit that chose to move with us to the cities from our last apartment, and telling him if he was going to sleep he could go and sleep in her bed and not her mommy's bed. I don't mind him there though. Makes the temperature a lil cooler for better sleeping, which makes a happier mom. He is more then welcome as long as he bahaves himself. I feel like a mother of 3 not 2 now!! Tis really weird. Thank again for posting the article Caesar!! Great publicity for the group and the website here Brian! :D

I worked at Glensheen for several years. It is very active and any one is is sensitive would have a hard time NOT to have had many experiences. I am posting jsut to say that there is a misconception that members of the Congdon family haunt the home. This is not true.

Many of the spirits come from the Swedish Cemetery that adjoins the estate by a bridge over Tisher Creek,\.

Good Luck Mr. Lawrence (the new director) ....what is the difference between shilling the books about the murder and discussing any paranormal activity in the estate. I think it would only be an asset to do a fine investigation by reputable scientists.

You could do worse then that by dredging up a murder to promote books and tours. Give me a break.

That is a very interesting perspective on Glensheen. I wish they were brave enough to have our team investigate.

We are doing another well known place in Duluth though on Sunday the 19th of Feb. We are doing a very large scale investigation of the Depot. That will be a lot of fun and very interesting. Who knows perhaps some day Glensheen will change their mind after they find out that the Depot did it.

Please share the info on The Depot and the other well known you are investigating in Duluth.....I would like to have more information on activity in Duluth.

There seems to be a fear of the paranormal and its study in Duluth.
