While walking back into my house from the back yard a waft of smoke blew in front of me.  At first I thought it was from my neighbors chimney but I could not see any smoke.  Next, I thought it was my son working in his workshop, maybe he was burning something out front.  When I went to check, he wasn't there-empty workshop.  So, I saw the smoke and smelled the smoke.  I could find no explanation for it.

Any suggestions as to what it could have been?

Thank you.

How far from a road or highway?  Car exhaust  floating in on the wind comes to mind.  You don't specify what it smelled like so that makes any reply a guess at best.  Could also be vapor instead of smoke which could originate with moisture....

You may want to rule out olfactory hallucinations. The fact that you saw smoke or possibly a mist may be coincidence.

Honestly something as fleeting as a whiff of smoke, would need to happen on more than one occasion, before thinking of anything supernatural, and even then unless the smell was always accompanied by a visual confirmation of smoke, I would still think a medical condition to be the more likely cause.

See if the event will repeat.. Attempt to re-create the events of that evening. Revisiting the location at the same time of day or night.

If you believe that this was a ghostly occurrence, you may need to be persistent. Even going so far as to marking the date on your calendar, to try to recreate the event the same time next year.
