...to contact a deceased relative or friend? Most of the ghost hunting I've read about seems to involve contacting long dead strangers. Yet, you sometimes don't have to have lived long to have lost someone close to you. I was curious to see what kind of experiences some my have had with this.

For me it seems that if it happens or would happen it would have to be something I didn't try to initiate.

Castlebee,

I think relatives are the easiest spirits to maintain communication with. Often they wander into our lives of their own accord. Sometimes they have something to say, sometimes they want to assure us of their well-being, and just as often they want to make sure we're okay.

If they don't appear to you clearly, they will often do little things to make sure you're aware of their presence...Your mother's picture may be moved, your aunt's sweater may bear her scent after months of being unused...There are so many ways we can become aware of their time spent with us after their passing.

I see spirits very easily and always have. I don't know why, but I have NEVER been able to see my mother and that has always bothered me. Maybe she does it for my own good...Who knows? However, I can tell when she's around from her scent. Her favorite was Chanel #5.

Two years ago, I smelled the perfume and actually felt her pass through me. I turned to Dave and said "Ahh, my mother is here.." We were very happy about that and celebrated her visit. I spoke with my sister that evening and she said mom had visited her as well...she smelled the Chanel.

The following morning we both received phone calls that our brother had passed at the time of our mother's visit. We're very sure Mom was here to tell us both that she was on this plane of existence to greet my brother and help him to pass over.

I believe that family is always family...Death may be a temporary separation, but we are never truly apart.

That was beautiful Holly - thanks for posting it!

A couple of odd things happened (well, there were probably more than that, but these are the ones we pickup on) after our mom's death almost two years ago. My sister and I (we now share the house) were making Thanksgiving dinner together and suddenly for no apparent reason the new microwave above the stove came on. We kept pressing buttons and could NOT get it to go off no matter what we did. Finally, my sister had to get the kitchen step stool and pull the plug (located in the back of the cabinet that it is mounted under) to get it to finally stop. This never happened before or since that day. Even my sister - the born skeptic - couldn't explain that one.

Another odd occurance happened the next summer involving our mom's car. When she died, we sold it to the guy who lives next door. He already had a car so he ended up keeping it parked in his drive which is right next to ours. Sometime during that next year, his health began to fail to the point that he was rarely even driving it by that next summer. One day my sister pulled in the drive and noticed that one of the turn signals on the car was blinking. She thought our neighbor had probably just bumped it getting out and, since the car was locked tight, she went up to his house to let him know. When she told him about it he said he hadn't even been in the car that day.

Another thing that happens on a regular basis and something we have both experienced when alone and together is that we will suddenly get a faint wiff of cigarette smoke. And, no one has smoked in the house since my mother was alive.

I think much of my family are sensitive to these things but most fight it due to things we were taught as kids. When my mom was very ill and about to die (though we really were not expecting it quite as soon as it happened) one of my aunts (her younger sister) told us that she felt the presence of a very disturbed spirit. I will always believe that this was my grandmother stressing my mom's passing over and all the heartache we were all feeling at the time.

Sorry to ramble so. Something about this time of year just brings it out in me.

Holly, CastleBee, what great stories. Yes, i believe our loved ones are around us all the time because they want to see how we're doing. Nothing more than that. And they do what they can to get our attention. And I loved the story of the Chanel No. 5; I smell green chile when my father is around. And I would be curious too, Holly, as to why you haven't been able to see your mother. Well, undoubtedly there's a good reason for it. would the microwave have exploded if you hadn't unplugged it? I'm not very good with technology.

You know, I think that one of the reasons that we can't 'see' certain family members is that they're quite happy on the other side. When an event that is important such as a brother passing I think they make a quick return but other than that they are doing their thing on the other side. Just my opinion--

That makes sense to me Hawker. I like to think there are lots of things that keep you busy over there!

My sisters daughter passed March 1st and since then my sister has been finding pennies every where she goes. They had a bank together that they put their loose change in for emergencies and I guess this is Mandy's way of helping her mom keep money in their bank.

Trudy,

This is a link to a thread about pennies appearing...Some of the posts are pretty interesting.

As for me not being able to see my mom....My deceased dad visits my son quite often - They astral travel together, meaning that my dad takes my son to different places I recall from my childhood, but that my son has never seen except when my dad takes him there. At one point, my son asked my dad why my mom never visits. My dad replied that she is "busy".

I don't know what she's busy doing, but I would love to see her for even a moment. I feel that if she goes so far as to let me smell her scent, a brief appearance would be a lovely thing as well! But, as I said before, maybe she believes it would be a difficult thing for me to handle. And she may be right. If I could see her for a moment, it would be hard to let her go again.

My father told me that when his last brother died, a week later, he had a dream where he met up with him in a field. My dad's brother told him that he was going to live to a ripe old age, and to not be sad because he left and that he was perfectly content where he was. Now, keep in mind that my father is possibly the most close minded person on the face of the planet, and I was totally and utterly shocked when he told us about this... but so far, his brother was right. While each of my father's brothers hadn't lived past the age of 60, my father is now 69.

Such great encounters!!!!!!!
My soul mate makes his presence known to me in many different ways.
He's definately helped me out of what could have been harmful
experiences MANY times.
I have smelled the scent of Lilacs (they were in full bloom when we
met) even when none are around....I think I posted that story so I
won't repeat it.
Probably though, the two most amazing (our song was Maybe I'm Amazed)
things that have ever happened....I couldn't even talk about one of
them for a year+ after it happened because I was so overwhelmed by it..
are one time in particular when he came to me in what I think was a dream,
or maybe I had an NDE, and the other was the time I came across lilacs,
4 of them blooming in late september/early october, 4 of them, on a lilac
bush that had already lost it's leaves (extra early, because that summer
New England had that really hot, dry drought, 2002).
I'll post each story separately, because they're kind of long.
As always, I really would like some input...PLEASE! I want to say, before I
post my stories that...
I have had inexplicable experiences happen to me ever since my earliest
childhood memories.
As a result, I have always had a VERY open mind, and I NEVER take things
for face value, I ALWAYS try to find an explanation when these things happen.
I never say to myself..."oh, something supernatural just happened again".
I don't even really like the term "supernatural". I try to find out WHY (I
don't always get as complete of an answer as I would like) a certain situation
has come about. That's why, I really do appreciate the input that I've received
when I post my stories....... THANKS :D
Well here are my stories, my next two posts in this thread!

Here's the dream, at least I think it was a dream.
My soul mate has come to me many times in dreams, but this one in
particular, really had a profound effect on me. So much so that I didn't
even talk about it for a year or more after it happened.
First of all, let me start by saying, I had been in the hospital for a day
and a night for minor surgery. So, perhaps the anesthesia may have
effected my sleep the night I got home. I asked my doctor about it,
and he said "No". I didn't have any kind of medication that would cause
me to have "strange dreams". Ok, well I checked on the obvious.
My surgery had been nasal sugery, so my breathing through my nose
was effected. There's another variable.
I was sitting propped up on my couch, watching tv. The time on my VCR
was 8:53pm. Next thing I knew I was standing up....I don't remember
getting up. The floor felt solid under my feet, but I couldn't see anything
except for colors all around me. Colors like I've never seen before!!!!
They seemed to have depth. Pastel closer to me and as I looked deeper
brilliant and vivid, made me squint.
Next thing I knew, I saw my soul mate coming toward me. He looked
exactly as he did when I first met him 3 years earlier. Same clothes
he had on, everything. He looked angry, for some reason, and that
startled me, and I felt sad. The direction he came from I couldn't see
anything, just him. Then he smiled at me and said my name, and told
me not to worry, that I was going to have a good life, he just wished he
could be there to enjoy it with me. I started to cry, and he touched my
left arm, and his touch felt hot. I begged him to tell me about, well
everything. He said that he couldn't, that to know is to pass on and I
was going back. The whole time, I felt solid like I was me, and I was
seeing out of my eyes, nothing seemed different about me.
He started to walk away and I started to cry harder and I tried to
follow him, but I couldn't move my feet. Next thing I remember I
felt like I was hit VERY hard on my upper back. I gasped and jolted
forward. I was crying and my left arm felt hot; the precise spot where
he had touched me. My Mum heard me crying and was sitting next to me.
I couldn't even speak, I felt so overwhelmed. So then, I'm not sure how
I realized that had all happened in a matter of minutes.
Beyond what I've just told you, I don't know what to say?

After my soul mate passed, I wanted some sort of sign. I prayed
all the time for one. I always believed that there is more beyond this,
but when someone close to you dies, I think we all want some proof
beyond faith. Something a bit more concrete and in human terms.
Well years have passed now, and let me say I've had make signs.
For that I am very grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably the most amazing sign had to be the time I came across 4
lilacs blooming on a lilac bush that had already lost it's leaves for the
season, because of the summer drought. It was the very end of September,
Lilacs bloom in may and June, depending on the species.
The REALLY amazing part of the story is, that was the sign I had been
praying for, to be given a lilac out of season. He died in 1987, and I
found the lilacs in 2002. But over the years, I had other signs that were
related to finding lilacs out of season. One was, I smelled lilacs when I
was taking a walk around my neighborhood on my birthday, Dec. 24th.
I was walking past the house where he lived when we first met and the
air was filled with the scent of lilacs. The the next year on my birthday,
my Mum had found me Lilac scented shampoo no less. I even happened
upon a movie one day about a woman waiting for a sign from her husband
who was a sea captain and was drowned in a storm. The sign she wanted..
a flower, not a lilad though. She gets her sign at the end after years of
waiting, and I finally got mine. Talk about life imitating art!!!!!!!!
One thing, noone can dispute seeing flowers blooming out of time!
It's tangible, it's something from nature, it's not something that can be
imagned or made to happen...it just did!!

Lilac,

I think your stories are fabulous and I thank you for sharing them with us!

The connection to have with your soul mate so many years after his passing is so strong and I admire you BOTH for that.

To see lilacs out of season in bloom is the best sign because there is no chance at all that it's imagination...Nature is working in league with you...Isn't that amazing???

"To know is to pass on" is an interesting thing he said to you. I understand that, but I so wish we could know more now. I have found that with all the spirits I have seen, very few even attempt to discuss their current environment.

Is there a George in your life? Not necessarily your soul mate...but any one by that name?

Holly
