OK, so everybody loses 21 grams of something when they die, what is it? I don't know the answer but I think maybe people think it is your soul.

Is this an urban legend or true?

What do you think it is?

I've heard this before, just don't know if it's true or not.  Granted, you'd lose air from your lungs you'd think, but I don't know about 21grams worth of air.
Is the art of life, living somewhere in between?

That's what I thought at first, Akthra, oxygen. 21 grams is only like 3/4 ounce, so that's not very much weight.

So what did you hear it was?

I heard it's because you tend to lose bladder control, so it's 21 grams of urine...though that actually doesn't sound like a lot for that.  Who knows?

I think I recall reading somewhere that at one point, some doctors actually conducted experiments.  With the agreement of a terminally ill patient, they would place them on specially constructed scales.  It was noted that every time a patient died, the scales dropped 21 grams.

I'll try to dig up that thing and post it here for everyone.  Some have theorized that the 21 grams represents the weight of the soul.  Again, I'll have to dig it up.

Neither can I actually Moon.  :)  Of course, it might be the loss of something else altogether and the good Doctor was simply interpreting things according to his faith.  Perhaps humans lose something at death that animals do not?  Or they lose the same thing and it weighes almost nothing at all in an animal?

It would be very, very interesting to see if someone would repeat the experiments or has, in a modern, more controlled environment.
