Regarding the Mayan calendar, I think that the 2012 date doesn't foretell the end of the world, but more the end of an age and the dawn of a new one. The Spaniards simply arrived, forced their religion on the People and a new calendar wasn't created with the new age.

Most Native Peoples of North America seem to have a belief system rooted in nature and animals. There is a lot of mysticism and magic as well, but used in harmony with The Great Spirit and Nature.

I believe that almost old old time religions do have the base in nature. As a Hindu, what I have realized is that, the Oneness of Nature and Spirit is what is of prime importance.
