HI there,

I'm writing to you all from Columbus, GA. There is a house here which is known as "The house of a thousand cadavers" but its more official title is the John Woolfolk house. I'm sure some of you have heard about it. I'm having a hard time finding out more about this location. I know where it is, I went and peeked in the windows today and got a good case of the heebie-jeebies. It was rundown for a while and then renovated but It is now up for sale. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how it got that gruesome nickname, if anyone has been inside it, what is its recent history, how long has it been vacant, what is going on there? All I can find is the short explanation which is repeated on every site, it has cold spots, moaning sounds, doors slam shut and... get this... you will experience confusion or insanity while inside. This sounds a bit melodramatic but you know, just the porch made me sick to my stomach. Also, have any research groups done any work there? I would love to hear anything anyone can tell me about this location.

Thank you!

I found a few pictures and a little bit of history on the John Woolfolk (Woolfalk?) house:

Thank you for your research! I have seen these pictures too. These are old pictures of the house. Since then it has been renovated (although it looks like it has been neglected since the renovation). I am wondering if the story attached - that Mr. Woolfolk killed 18 slaves and buried them on the property - is a true one or just a local legend. I've not lived in this area very long so I'm wondering if this is one of those cases of folks passing down stories or if there is actually any history to back this up. I did discover that Mr. Woolfolk did own slaves as well as a large cotton plantation (though the plantation was somewhere else). All of the historical writing I have found about him says that he was a good man, his family has a long and venerable history. Anybody know more? I'm kind of obsessing a little bit.

Thanks again!

Since he seemed to have been a good man, maybe all the stuff of him killing his slaves is just a legend. This place looks creepy that's for sure!

Whatever

That's the conclusion I've come to. I can't find any information on it, other than your normal historic records and I think it just developed a reputation because it was run down for so long. I haven't seen any reports anywhere of an actual person whose had a "paranormal" experience there so I think it is just rumors.

Thanks for the update and the link, bethoc! While I suspect it may be haunted, too, I'm sure the local real estate market had a lot to do with the decrease in price :Spaz:
