Dear Ghostvillagers,

How are you doing? No, really, how are you holding up right now? It’s a strange time. The strangest I’ve seen (which is saying quite a lot considering my profession). So when I ask, I mean it. It’s not rhetorical.

I’ve been feeling the isolation a lot, but I’m also making an effort to reach out more. Not just to my friends and family, but to anyone who needs it. On my Facebook page I started hosting an online chat series I call the Speak Easy. I’ve been having drinks and interactive video chats with some of my friends from around the globe. Many of them are paranormal friends like Dave Schrader from The Holzer Files, Josh Gates from Expedition Unknown, Dustin Pari from Ghost Hunters, plus many others.

Though it’s not the same as meeting in person, offering a hug, and feeling the energy of other people, it’s a close second. And it’s helped me quite a bit. You’re invited to join me anytime. I’ve been holding these things 3-4 times per week. You can post comments and come feel social with us. You can also watch the whole backlog of Speak Easy episodes on my new Web site here: https://jeffbelanger.com/speak-easy/

Since my shut-in, I feel like I’ve also rediscovered the power of music. The way it can lift my mood, or commiserate with me when I’m feeling down. It can make me laugh, and make me cry depending on what I need in the moment. It’s been helping me get me through.

"Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right." – Grateful Dead

I’ve been picking up my guitar again. It feels like an old friend. My playing isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it makes me feel good, and that helps.

"There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in." –Leonard Cohen

Music has the ability to tap into deep parts of our psyche and change us. The right beat can possess us like a spirit and involuntarily send us into motion, twirling and spinning to the thumps and melody.

"All I want to do is zoom-a-zoom-zoom-zoom And a poom-poom, just shake ya rump!" –Wreckx-n-Effect

We do what we have to do to get by right now. But I hope and pray we keep our humanity. That we never forget how important it is to connect with our world, our friends, and our neighbors. If we can’t physically connect, then it’s up to each of us to find another way.

"I see my light come shining / From the west unto the east / Any day now, any day now / I shall be released." –Bob Dylan

This month we’re going to explore the personal, spiritual, and even the supernatural side of music on Ghostvillage.com.

"And when the broken-hearted people / Living in the world agree / There will be an answer / Let it be" –The Beatles

Offering my live programs and lectures is another aspect I miss greatly, but fortunately I’m finding venues willing to host Zoom meetings where I can tell my stories. The best part is you don’t need to be local for some of these. Wherever you live you can register, watch, and participate from the comfort of your own home (all for free). The first is coming up April 25th, more will be added soon. You can visit my events page for more details.

Rock on, my friends. We’ll get through this together. Don’t forget to connect however you can do it.

Supernaturally yours,

My favorite Paranormal song

Doon Coolin's face the night is sailing
The banshee croons her note of wailing;
My blue eyen wi' sorrow are streaming
For I noo will never return MacCrimmon

No more, no more, no more MacCrimmon;
In war nor in peace shall return MacCrimmon;
Till dawns the sad day of doom and burning
MacCrimmon is home no more returning

The breeze on the bray is mournfully moaning;

The brook in the hallow is plaintively mourning;
But my blue eyen with sorrow are streaming
For I noo will never return MacCrimmon

No more, no more, no more MacCrimmon;
In war nor in peace shall return MacCrimmon;
Till dawns that great day of doom and burning
MacCrimmon is home no more returning

According to Hopekirk, this melody was composed in 1745 on the departure of Donald MacCrimmon by his sister. Another legend has it that Donald MacCrimmon had a premonition of his death and composed the tune the night before he died and that his sister later wrote the words. Donald MacCrimmon is said to have been killed in a skirmish in 1746 at the Rout of Moy during the last Jacobite Uprising. The MacCrimmons were famous pipers and the hereditary pipers of the Clan MacLeod.
