never heard of it, but it could exist i guess, the only thing i heard of was when i was watching a ghost show on bio, the man used to smoke cigars when he was alive, and then someone smelled cigars in the house that was haunted by the man, but u never know that show could have been fake becuase it was on TV.

From a folkloric point of view, different smells can help you distinguish what type of entity you're dealing with. The smell of roses is often associated with angelic experiences, Marian apparitions, guardian angels, and a host of other positive spirits and experiences of a spiritual or religious nature.

Understandably, many believe that foul smells indicate a negative entity, including but not limited to demonic. The classic smell of sulfur is a big one associated with these types of experiences, but so are smells of feces, rotting flesh, "death" and other pungent, foul odors. Not really related to what is being discussed, but Sasquatch sightings are also accompanied by what many describe as a really foul, pungent odor, lol.

Then, in the middle you have the regular human hauntings...or beings that were once living human beings. The smells associated with these types of hauntings generally tend to be very "human" in nature. Food smells, cigar/pipe/cigarette smoke, and favorite perfumes/colognes seem to be the most common reported. Smell is the sense most closely related to memory, and in many of these reports, people believe they can identify the entity in question based on a scent associated to that person.

Unfortunately, there are SO MANY things that can cause false positives when it comes to phantom odors. When investigating such claims, one needs to take into consideration a host of physical and mental disorders that range from simple sinus infections to more serious issues such as brain tumors. Also, people grossly underestimate the power of scent ions, lol. Scents can travel, can originate in unlikely spots, and can become trapped in an environment to be released later on when humidity, pressure, and temperatures are at an optimum level.

I've written an article on the phenomenon of phantom smells, known medically as phantosmia. You can find it on my website, linked below, for more information.

I found this article today that gives a little bit more information on the idea of ghosts manifesting certain scents:

An experience I've had with a smell.... I was sitting at the dinning table reading in the middle of the day. First I had a feeling of some one standing behind me. I was alone in the house with cats. I looked at the closest cat and she was looking up and behind me. Just then I got a whiff of Old Spice. Oh, hey Dad, I thought. That scent will always remind me of my Dad. The scent moved from my right to my left and seemed to travel away from me. The neat part of this is that my cat Sophie, still looking at what-ever, slowly walked to the couch, sat and stared up at the couch as if looking at someone or something. I felt like I had a visit.

Maybe I haven't experienced anything lately because the spirits may be put off by my odors.
Seriously, I have wondered about phantom odors and such. My state of mind is to automatically search for a natural source or reason for the odors (check my armpits, look accusingly at the dog, blame my wife or son) without any consideration to anything paranormal, which I think would be normal anyway. Without finding a natural source, I will just shrug my shoulders with a mentally-stated "Oh, well..." and move along. So I wonder if any of those times could have been other than natural or reasonable. I know there is no way of knowing, but even with my "logical" mind-set, I go off my grid sometimes and ponder the possibilities, even if I don't agree with the pondered theory.
Okay, spirits, you can come back now; I've been less gassy lately. Really!

I've had the experience of smelling peculiar odours around a house while staying in it for 2 months. The smell of rotting meat would usually pass by at random times. A very strong foul smell too. Many people in the house had the same experience so I guess I wasn't alone on this one. Lot's of people have told me they smelled smoke, but smoke is hard to distinguish. Is the smell of smoke really paranormal? Could've come from many different non paranormal factors too. Which I'm sure many know applies to many other odours. However rotting flesh? I wasn't aware of any dead animals in the house so I wonder what caused that smell to " pass by".
