I was particually interested in the training films and carrier footage; me likes that kind of stuff.
Took my son out last Thursday to shoot my M1 Garand and Mosin-Nagant. He had never fired a rifle in his life as he is autistic and doesn't like loud noised (couldn't bring himself to shoot my AK two years ago). I talked him into it and through it, and now he's M1 crazy. He wants to see books and such about it. You just now gave me the idea to look up training films.
As for the carrier footage, that's one of my first loves when learning about WW2. The Corsair was WW2, the Skyraider JUST missed WW2 and was a new generation of heavy-duty support aircraft, and the Panther jet was naval aviation breaking away from prop-driven combat aircraft. It's a nice mixed bag of carrier aircraft. Thank you.

My uncle was an TBM Avenger driver during WWII in the pacific and spent a lot of time floating around in a rubber raft. Avengers were big slow targets and ran out of gas first when trying to find the carrier after a mission. The carriers moved after launching a strike and held radio silence so the aircraft had to go back to where the carrier was and start box search patterns to find where it had moved.
He was a big guy, they had to shoehorn him into the cockpit and every time he had to bail out he either bruised or broke one of his knees.I think he was broken-hearted when I joined the Army as an Enlisted man.

KICK A.S.S.! The TBM is one of my favorite aircraft. And a big thank you to your uncle for his service.
Continuing with the "KICK A.S.S.", these are great videos. I have had experience to a certain degree with all of the guns shown, even the MP40 with which I have had more experience than the other two submachine guns. Yes, I knew that the Grease Gun was still in service up til current times, but I don't know if that's the case anymore.

The Grease Gun was retired in the 80's and isn't used except for the Philippines Military that I know of. Mine was an original M3 with the bolt crank on the side and a flash hider cone located at the end of the barrel. The saftey on the M3A1s wasn't all that safe so you never carried it around with one in the chamber. The only other problems were you loaded all morning and fired for about 20 minutes and all the ammo was gone and .45cal is one heavy ammo box to lug around. Heavier than even the .50cal boxes!

I got to show the TBM they have on the Hornet to my nephew and niece and proudly proclaim that it was the kind of plane Uncle Bill flew in the Pacific.

After all these years I still feel funny when people thank me for my service. I've been spit on, had blood, urine and feces thrown at me, called "Baby Killer", had whole families get up and leave the airport seating areas they were sitting in when we, in our black berets, khakis and spit-shined boots sat down. It got to be a joke with us.... protecting people who hated us. It created an US and THEM mentality for sure
We were being attacked by Terrorists long before anyone else was and no one seemed to give a BAD_WORD back then. ( Look up Baader Meinhof and Red Army Faction )
So, like I said, it still feels funny...... but good. So Thanks.

Well, at least you got to play with an M3 for a prolonged period; I envy you.
There used to be a wrecked TBM at a fire fighter training center in Corpus Christi, Texas when I lived there as a kid in the early 70s. It always fascinated me. I believed it was later partially restored for a memorial on the naval air station there. Now I believe the USS Lexington (a Hornet sister ship), which is moored at the harbor entrance right where I used to fish sometimes as a kid, had a TBM, or it should; it has a SBD, F4F, and other WW2 aircraft. I love all of those. And I actually met a guide on there who was stationed on the Hornet and saw the USS Enterprise get his by the kamikazi that took her out of the war.
Regarding vets, I can understand how the attention can be strange to you, especially after obviously unwanted negative attention. People will pull that s.h.i.t when they don't need you, but see you as their saviour when they do. As for me, I have always had a weird reaction to you guys. I treat you kind of like movies stars, and I don't want to bother you in public, whether in uniform or wearing something denoting a vet status. But my wife will sometimes prod me into going up to vets to say thank you or to ask about their service. Other times I get up the courage and say something on my own. It's funny, my youngest brother is an Army vet (1987 to 1991), and I see him as just my kid brother. I never think of him as a vet in the moment, just as that kid whom my older brother and I put in a duffle bag and threw off the porch when we were younger.

There are a few ghost groups that are over there and they seem to hit the more local buildings, not battlefields. Even the TV shows have not traveled to those areas much. You would think with all the activity that there is in Gettysburg here, that some would wonder into the battlefields there. The other thing is, they are not in promotional settings so to say or tourist attractions for ghost hunters. I see this type of thing more and more with the shows, that they seem to be promoting places to draw tourists. Just one reason I feel affects this.

Many places, like the Somme, which here to fore have been farmer's fields are being turned into industrial parks. The Honored Dead and the archeology are being paved over as we speak. So I'm betting in a few years those same industrial parks will be haunted as Hades!
