RIVERDALE

My first exposure to Riverdale Road was an article from my high school paper dated October 25th, 1995 which told of myths about a man who went insane, murdering himself and his family in a house fire he started, leaving only the chicken coops and an ominous iron gate. Teens spread the urban legend for years, claiming the chicken coops were Gates to Hell, and it became quite the young tourist attraction. My school paper also warned of a phantom drag racer who would challenge you in his pickup, and would run you off the road whether you won or lost.

As soon as I was licensed to drive, I spent almost every year since exploring the road, and introducing the curious to its grisly legends.

Along the way, I’ve met others who’d heard gory details about the roads frightening past.

History

I’ve discovered reports about Riverdale Road’s early history, suggesting that much slave labor occurred in the surrounding area. Found on the historic Cherokee Trail, the land was inhabited by Native Americans long before Europeans set foot in the area now known as Thornton.

In a report researched and written by High School teachers and students in the 1970’s, we are told of a historic mansion on Riverdale built by David Wolpert. He came into the area while following the gold rush. He married, had children (two who were deaf mutes), and settled down on 9190 Riverdale, in his home, the Wolpert Mansion.

Years later, tenants would report floods (no damage reported), and in May 1975 the chicken barn was burned to the ground. Later that year, the Mansion was also destroyed in a blaze.

This may have alluded to tales about the area called “The Gates of Hell.” It’s said to be much further north than the Wolpert Mansion, but the legends tell of a man who went insane and burned his house to the ground, with his family and himself within. It was said that his chicken coop was where had been provoked by demons to commit the murder/suicide. For years, the chicken coop was guarded by a large fence to deter the curious from exploring, and the mischievous from vandalism, hence the term “The Gates of Hell.”

Aside from legends regarding the Gates of Hell, there is a story about a young boy who was walking to school and was hit by a car along the way. It is said that he walks the street at night, smearing his blood on the street signs as he goes.

Riverdale has the scariest signs I’ve ever seen. Sometimes the shapes on the signs resemble handprints and dried blood splatters. The thing is, I’ve never seen any such signs anywhere else. And these signs aren’t just weathered signs that have been posted for the last 20 years. As two new bridges have been recently constructed, new signs have been added on the street. These new signs also contain the blood-like markings. If you visited today and then visited a week from now you might still see the markings, but they would vary from the ones you saw today.

I have yet to find evidence of this child’s identity, accident, or death.

I have, however, uncovered many accident reports and online testimonials that would suggest automobile accidents, often not resultant of drugs or alcohol. And what’s more, there weren’t other vehicles involved. It sounds as though the driver saw something and swerved to avoid it… Or perhaps outrun it…

Animals

I once explored the road with a friend who had heard stories about demons who take animal form and haunt Riverdale Road. Likely stemming from Native American Legend, it was said that if you witness three forms of life (not counting other drivers or insects, of course) between entering Riverdale on 104th ave, reaching the end, and returning, then you would certainly die before reaching the bridge on 104th.

In my many years of exploration, I haven’t seen more than two. Anticipating a third is scary as Hell.

My friend also spoke of two animal guardians in constant battle. A demon, or the devil himself, is said to take the form of a gray fox. His evil will consume you, should you encounter him.

His rival, a coyote, is said to be an Angel sent to protect you on your journey. I have seen a red fox twice before, but have yet to see the gray fox or coyote.

People have often reported seeing an Old Woman with a grocery cart, or a disembodied jogger along the side of the road. Other classic spirits like a ghostly hitch hiker, and a woman who was just in an accident, but disappears when you stop have also been supposedly seen.

Perhaps scariest of all are the reports of Satanist cults who hold black masses in the fields. And worse yet, stemming from a history of tragedies, is it possible that spirits of the dead, the damned, and the cursed are enough to drive wanderers to the brink of madness and murder?

A young lady I grew up with was taken from her place of employment Christmas Eve 1988, her car was found abandoned on this road, not far from the Wolpert Mansion site. Her body was also found near the area of 88th and Riverdale Road. She had been strangled and beaten. The person responsible was never found, but there may be some public records. Her name was Heidi McGuire (spelling may be wrong) I believe she was 18 or 19 years old at the time of her abduction and subsequent murder.

Also, many years ago, before I knew of the reports about Riverdale Road, I dated this guy, he liked to park at Hells Gate with me. I know it was Hells Gate because of the location reported on many of the sites I have come across. It is a dirt road you would miss if you did not know where it is, north of the golf course at about where 132nd would be if it intersected with Riverdale. I had no idea the place was reported to be haunted, but one time we were on the hood of his car, he was all over me, but it felt like we were being watched, and it was not just because we were going at it in the open air either. Someone was watching. Looking back on it now, I remembered hearing sounds, like when your ears are muffled and you can hear your own heartbeat, but I thought it was just because he was going nuts on me and I just wanted to get out of there. Anyhow...I do NOT recommend stopping there.

Thank you for posting this. This case has been bothering me for years. I went to school with Heidi. I also went to school with the girl whose house Heidi's car was found in front of. I thought they arrested a boy from our school for this. We never really knew, he just stopped attending. There were other rumors that it was a teacher who seemed close to her. I remember her from school and a few parties. She worked at a Circle K. Right? And two boys found her in the snow. Sad. I posted to another sight, strange usa this is what I posted:

I too grew up in the area, Northglenn, and we would drive the road in the early 80's. On a summer night we drove north from 104th when we passed 112th the farms on the east side of the road were dark except one and through the trees in the distance we saw figures of people that were circling a large fire almost rhythmically. We stopped turned off the car and sat and tried to listen to hear their faint chanting. It was then that an older pickup truck appeared behind us in the dark and he waited to turn on his headlights until he was nearly on top of us. We freaked out and sped north. At Quebec St we u-turned to head south. We passed the pick up and could tell he was going to turn around too. We passed the original spot and the alternator began to have problems, the lights became very dim and the engine was dying. My friend drove the hell out of that car and we made it back to 112th and Colorado Blvd and no pick up in sight. This happened. But something else happened here and this is what I am trying find information about. In 1986-1987 two 10 year old boys found the body of a girl in the snow some distance from the road. Her car was found in a snow drift near Mckay and Riverdale Rd. She went to our High School and was abducted from her work place, circle K. I think her name was Heidi ?? Anyone else?

I am so glad that she is not forgotten. I still remember her leather moccasin boots.

Funny I used to hear so much of these stories growing up in Brighton. Yes, the road the original poster is looking for is indeed Riverdale Rd. Yes, when you drive through Riverdale at night you do see smears on signs that look as if they are imprinted there (like something was splattered and eerily enough they reflect with the sign but are not there in the day). I don't think I've ever seen the lady in white but highly doubt I would stop for her. What made me finally respond is the last posting. I remember this night very clearly, my ex and I used to go to the Louisville movie theaters. I was about 16 then I believe. We would take the back roads to and from Brighton and Louisville. Anyways, we had just finished watching the Blair Witch so there was already this whole creepiness to the night. We actually decided to cut through Quebec to get back to Hwy 7 instead of taking Riverdale. I forget why but I remember that night I had this creepy feeling about Riverdale and I asked him to take Quebec instead. While passing it I remember looking over and he said I think that's the road thats supposed to take you to the Gates of Hell. As we passed the dirt road our Jeep that was practically brand new and had just had a tune up began to die. The weird thing was that it had nothing to do with the engine but the gears slowly, one by one started going out until we came to a slow hault. My ex jumped out already freaked enough as it is and looked under the hood and of course nothing was wrong with it. We however were going to opposite way. We jumped off Riverdale and took Quebec towards hwy 7. In the distance you could hear the sound of someone coming but nothing was appearing. I remember my ex jumped back into the jeep and cranked the hell out of the engine and gear shift. The BAD_WORD thing finally started up and we booked it the hell out of there. I also remember another time taking riverdale at night and what appeared to be the car everyone on here is describing was coming up quick on my BAD_WORD! Actually following every turn I was making until I finally jumped onto Quebec and took 120th. It made me nervous but never thought anything of it except that some jerk was going around scarring people.

Oops, so the car that I'm talking about is the old jeep looking police cruiser. It had a light on the top of the jeep/truck thing if I remember correctly. It struck me as odd.

My ex jumped out already freaked enough as it is and looked under the hood and of course nothing was wrong with it. We however were going to opposite way. We jumped off Riverdale and took Quebec towards hwy 7. In the distance you could hear the sound of someone coming but nothing was appearing. I remember my ex jumped back into the jeep and cranked the hell out of the engine and gear shift. The BAD_WORD thing finally started up and we booked it the hell out of there. I also remember another time taking riverdale at night and what appeared to be the car everyone on here is describing was coming up quick on my BAD_WORD! Actually following every turn I was making until I finally jumped onto Quebec and took 120th. It made me nervous but never thought anything of it except that some jerk was going around scarring people.

Can anyone give me directions to the Riverdale Road and Gates of Hell????

Go to maps.google.com and type "Riverdale Road, Brighton, CO" in the search field. It'll take you right to a map of the area. Riverdale Road runs between Riverdale Knolls Golf Course and ends in a three way intersection when it reaches Hwy 7 in Brighton.
