I recall reading something a while ago about "black dogs"; I believe the stories were European. Black dogs with fiery eyes that are harbingers of death.......anyone familiar with this?

I recall hearing something about the Hounds from Hell. I heard something about them guarding the gates of hell.

I think there a number of black dog topics either in the Urban Legands board or General, I know we've had some pretty interesting discussions about them. Not sure if they are part of the fairy folk or not though.

I just read an article on "black dogs" not too long ago. It was a really weird one that did connect them with fairies and said that fairy folk were their keepers. It also connected them with a lot of strange crypto-zoology creatures. Everything from Chupacabras to the famous Mothman of Pennsylvania and Ohio. That was the first I'd ever heard of them. Did a little research last night and the fairy connction isn't common though. It's mainly an English phenomena reported in rural parts of Great Britain.

I do have a story of a possible real encounter of something like this. My mother has a story of seeing something outside through her bedroom window when she was in her early teens. She described it as sounding like a dog panting and growling but looking almost like a bear. Long black shaggy fur and bright red glowing eyes and no details in the face because of all the fur.
