Actually we meditate all the time. Whenever we are doing a mundane task (doing dishes, dusting, comes to mind) our mind goes into auto pilot and we are not consciously thinking. Purposefully meditating as suggested, is a good way to keep the mind actively seeking a spiritual handle on these mind wanderings.

Meditation is actively working to calm one's cluttered mind, opening it to new ideas or ways of thinking. I love what someone once said a long time ago when asked what the difference between prayer and meditation was:
"Prayer is speaking to God. Meditation is listening to Him."
"Prayer is speaking to God. Meditation is listening to Him."
"Never wrestle with a pig. All you get is dirty and the pig has all the fun." ~ Anon.
