Starting Saturday, in the unlikeliest of places, a real witch school opens its doors to the public in a place known as the Sweet Corn Capital of the World.

After almost five years of existence on the Internet, Witch School is expected to operate under normal business hours in the town of Hoopeston, Ill., about 100 miles south of Chicago.

Thats pretty cool. Maybe this will (finally) open the doors to this sort of thing and make neo-Pagan-esque religions not only accepted but mainstream. I just think its sick that people can stop these sort of things happening with petitions, I mean discrimination by religion is against the Constitution, and as long as they aren't breaking any REAL laws or harming people, I think its a great idea!

Ty for posting this article....I have been keeping up on this school for a while now, and I am glad that they are finally able to open up a site for the school.

I have been thinking of signing up for a couple of their classes, but never got around to it lol I would love to be able to attend classes of this sort along with going to a normal college. I envy the people around that area^_^

Earth, first of all I have to say I love your second topic line..."Hix Nix Wiccs"...clever!

And.......I love this article and wish them all the success in the world - They've made it through the hard part - the negativity that is being directed at them.

Hix Nix Wiccs

Sorry, I couldn't resist it

Hopefully, the local community will get over their fear of the unknown and realize that Wiccans are normal, average people, and that they command the same respect as any one else . . . time will tell.

you know what's really sad about this article, AOL has posted a poll asking people
What's your opinion of Wicca?
It's evil 44%
It's harmless 41%
It's great 15%
Total Votes: 164,455

Would you want the Witch School in your area?
No 50%
I wouldn't care 33%
Yes 17%
Total Votes: 166,196

I went to the link that says "post thoughts" and it is very sad to see the people that hate Wicca and other "new age" religions, and the people who are trying to stand up for wicca but instead of being nice about it they are bashing traditional religions instead.

If you want to turn the tables on the polls go to the site and vote!

So much for open-mindedness, eh?

My vote goes in too. Reading through those comments gives me a great perception about how certain beliefs are propogated.

How is this school certified? I mean, you can say that what they teach there is truly Wicca?

Traditional religions have Scriptures which are universally accepted. People can easily see if a Baptist college's teaching are in line with the Bible. Same thing for Jewish schools being compared with the Torah. What writings are likewise universally accepted by Wiccans?

I wouldn't care if such a school opened in my town as long as they had to follow the same regulations as any other private school.

Having read the comments, I couldn't help but note how many attacked the beliefs of others. Christians posted that Wicca is of the Devil, and Wiccans calling Christianity evil. One Pagan went as far as to post over 40 points that supposedly disproves Christianity.

I am glad that in the Village we can calmly and rationally talk about religion without attacking the beliefs of others. You truly are the secret behind GV's success.

I read through a few of the posts on that site and SHEESH - what a bunch of defensive, rude and possibly scared individuals. And I'm talking about both sides of the argument - though, it could obviously be argued that there are more than two distinct sides to that one.

Discussion is a good thing but, when people get that riled up I think they just end up cancelling each other out and blowing any chance of getting a point across. :Wall:
