While I think curses are possible, I also think that by being told you are cursed then you are open to think everything bad is part of it.
Curses are very real and have to be used with extreme caution (if at all). On my religious mission in Brazil, I witnessed two curses fulfilled. The first was when my companion and I dusted our shoes. The receiver didn't know the significance of the act, so it couldn't have been a self-fulfilling prophecy. The next day lightning struck and burned down that house (thankfully no one was inside at the time). Thing about this type of curse is that you never dictate what will happen - it's just a testimony that you wash your hands of that individual, so let whatever's going to happen happen.
The second saw a woman age 20 years in the course of 12 months. I don't think she deserved something that harsh. My senior companion cursed a 50 year old woman right before we were transferred to a different city. By luck I was transferred back a year later and stumbled on a woman who appeared 70, but on talking with her I found it was the same person. I tried to lift the curse but couldn't.
