There's a lot of talk on the boards about doing spirit rescue / release for earthbound souls, especially groups of souls from natural disasters, wars, and catastrophes, in particular 9/11.
This reminded me of a prayer meeting held at our local Unitarian Universalist fellowship on the day of the attack. I'm not the prayer group type of person, but attended to be with other people because at the time I lived alone. This was westcentral Illinois, far removed from the epicenter of disaster, but we all cared about what was going on and needed to reach out. The meeting was called on short notice so the group was small, about 10 people, mostly women. We talked openly about any friends and family who were directly affected by the attack and what we could do to reach out to the Islamic center and students on campus.
So there was a new geeky guy from the fellowship at the meeting. From previous times talking with him, I knew he was extremely intelligent, if not a bit arrogant, and pretty much knew everything about religion, the occult, magic, energy healing (he was a Reiki practitioner), psychic phenomena, governement experiments, and conspiracy theories, pretty much everything one would hear on an Art Bell program. Know the type? (I apologize for stereotyping people.) In his defense, I'll admit he was very nice and had kind intentions, but could have used a few social skills.
Ok, back to the prayer meeting. As you might well know, UUs are a diverse bunch of people, and UU services tend to be a bit freer and lack the dogma that other religious groups practice. Basically our pastor said a few words, and we sat in silent meditation for about 15 minutes. At the end of it, the geeky guy let out this loud sigh and opened his eyes. He said, "I just helped hundreds of souls cross over." He explained that while he was meditating and sending healing energy, he was drawn to GZ in the astral realm and helped hold open a portal so souls could cross over. Those aren't his exact words, but it's the best explanation I can give. I also practiced Reiki, and also sent healing energy to the victims and their families in meditation. My experience was far less heroic than this guy had.
My initial response to his declaration after the prayer was "Jeez, this guy is an arrogant BAD_WORD." I was so mad at him being a drama queen at the meeting. Seriously, how could one person claim such bold actions to have personally helped hundreds of souls cross over? It blew my mind. The people I practiced Reiki with were cautious about selfcenteredness and spiritual materialism, so that kind of behavior was way out there. I didn't say anything. Maybe I misdunderstood him. I figured I was just peevish because his personality simply rubbed me the wrong way, I had major problems at my job, and generally it was a BAD_WORD day. I don't doubt his compassion and his intention. I am sure he did help people, as did everyone who prayed and meditated that day and forever after.
What's my point? I'm not exactly sure.
In learning about Reiki healing and other forms of meditation, I learned it's possible to pracitce healing at a distance through focusing attention on a recipient. Prayer groups have been documented to help sick people. All kinds of phenomenal actions are possible through astral travel. So this concept isn't new. What I do not entirely understand (but do not doubt or discredit) is how soul rescue / release works at a distance, especially when people are hundreds of miles away.
Maybe this is similar to psychic detectives who can work on cases far away and help police solve crimes. Maybe this is similar to remote viewing. Maybe it's astral travel.
In working with our ghost team, we have done crossover work for earthbound spirits. I never work alone in this, always with one or more members of the team and always with assistance from spirits on the other side.
Some experts in paranormal investigations, shamans, and psychics disagree with this approach. They argue that crossover work does not work and ghosts eventually come back. One friend explained to me that he thinks we are interfering with the karma or spiritual development of an earthbound ghost if we help it cross over. He is also convinced ghosts always come back. I argued back that perhaps it is our karma to help these souls cross over so they can continue their spiritual path.
I've come to have mixed feelings about crossover work. I am not absolutely certain about the effectiveness of it. I do believe we are helping. Even if spirits choose not to cross over, at least these souls have been reminded of their situation and their free will to stay or to leave.
There is one case where the homeowners do not want us to return to their house. They don't want us to make their ghost leave. What they don't understand is that we can't make him do anything he doesn't want to do. He's like a member of the family or a superantural pet that does amazing tricks. He's their claim to fame. He's happier in death than in life. He's the invisible man. He's a magician. He's a suicide who realized the afterlife is fun.
I want to talk to him. I want to tell him how meeting him affected me personally. In my mind I have tried to reach out to him and communicate. I don't know if he hears me. If this spirit release business works at a distance, maybe then he could be helped. Truth be told, he doesn't want "help." He still has free will to stay with the living, but should know he has a choice.
Ok, that's my 99 cent value menu's worth. Discuss.
