A couple things here.. 3 a.m., as stated by several before, is supposedly the exact opposing time of Christ's death (3 p.m.). This hour is believed to have more demonic activity, not paranormal activity, due to its significance in the world of religion.
"But if we've changed time so much, it wouldn't matter anymore?" That's actually quite sad, really. Do you think that beings who've been around since the creation of time itself, would really be too ignorant to understand our primitive methods of Daylight Savings? Or that they would be opposed to using a time slot that man has created (the "witching hour") throughout stories over the years, to be more active? By the way, to whomever it was that stated this 3 a.m. thing is a new fad- there's nothing new about this theory. Just because shows like Paranormal State attempt to use things that shows like Ghost Hunters do not, doesn't mean it's new, and it also does not mean it's a scheme.
There are several possibilities to consider here.. Those of us involved in a Christian based, religious upbringing already know the story of Christ's crucifixion. We also know that anything directly opposing God (opposite of his will), is thought to be the work of Satan. Naturally, if 3 p.m. was a significant time for Christ, 3 a.m. would have been thought to be a significant time for Satan. Have we put this together to actually make it more than it really is? Quite possibly so, yes. Some experience things this hour, some don't.
Another possibility, 3 a.m. is when we finally start to fall into the deepest portion of our sleep cycle (this applies to some, not all, much like the phenomenon of 3 a.m.). Check out Konstantinos or The Dream Dudes for more information on this subject. In fact, many dream analysts have information regarding this, so just look around a little.
My answer? It's thought to represent demonic activity, not all paranormal activity as a whole. Using it to summon spirit communication every time you think you've got a haunting - naive. It wouldn't make any difference what time it is if the time holds no significance to the spirit. But I also think there is too much theory out there in the field right now to really make any solid decisions. More emphasis on the study of facts, like psychology and the like, would be of much more value than buying every book on ghosts that hits the shelf.. Just my two cents.
