I have a few higher-end digital recorders, but also want to get a cassette recorder to run along with the digitals. Although I can't afford a fortune, I noticed that Ebay has several used Tascam Portastudio cassette recorders originally intended for musicians. Since these are really not much more used than a new "shoebox"-type cassette recorder, I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this? I figure if they originally designed these for musicians, they probably have better frequency response, etc. than a regular cassette recorder, and Tascam has a good reputation. Also, they seem to be relatively portable.

Good recorder, I use one here, a four track Ministudio. Before buying just make sure the tensioning spring on the pinch roller is good. They do have a problem with the plastic retainer breaking. It is not a hard fix, but something you need to be aware of if you buy a used one.

The recorder itself does an excellent job on a par with my Marantz pro deck.
