I'm currently playing Amos Hart in "Chicago" with Bakersfield Music Theatre and we will be performing at the Harvey Auditorium in a couple of weeks. We just started rehearsals there and I played Jud in "Oklahoma" there two years ago. I've heard that the theater is haunted, and the dressing rooms and green room under the stage can feel pretty spooky, but I've never actually had any experiences myself. Just that looming feeling, which I've mainly felt in the men's dressing room. Now that I think about it, the rest of the theater really does feel fine to me. The green room really isn't that bad, just a little heaviness in there and in the hallway - the little make-up room off of the green room feel's fine. I've never been in the women's dressing room. The worst part really is the men's dressing room, and more specifically the restroom in there - where there is a shower that is ALWAYS dripping, lol.

Anyway, so I'm wondering if anyone else here has heard stories about the theater or, better yet, had any experiences. It's really a beautiful theater and will work here any chance I get. The kids of Bakersfield High School, where the theater is located, are soooooo lucky!

Oh, forgot to mention that I looked up a little history on the building and they finished construction in 1949 but they had started much earlier and had to stop due to the war. From what I understand it was built as part of Roosevelt's New Deal which built schools all over the country. Also, when I was a kid I worked a lot at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center in San Mateo, California (also on a high school campus) and the layouts and original interior building materials are identical. I'm guessing there are probably more of these theaters out there somewhere.

According to a posting on the Shadowlands website, there is supposedly a ghost haunting the Harvey Auditorium. The story goes that a worker died after falling from the rafters and landing in the basement during the initial construction of the building, and he's still hanging around.

Perhaps the archives of the local newspaper can shed some light on what happened . . .
