Also, some people have cool pictures and/or graphics by their name. How does that happen?

Your name will say newbie next to it until you make a certain number of posts (I believe it's 50 or 60, I can't remember). The more posts you make, the more your rank moves up over time.
Please note you have to be signed in for your posts to count towards your user name (for example, in this post you were signed in as a guest, so this post doesn't count towards your user name).
To get cool images next to your username, click on the "profile" link at the top of the page and scroll down, you can select from one of our many images, or if you have your own there is a place to provide a link to that image.

i just made it up to junior villager(;D) and i'm wondering what the next level up is and how many posts i have to make to get up to that

these are the levels.
50 -> Junior Villager
we have made some changes of late, so I am not sure about how much the other levels actually demand, but 500+ is Village Elder.

i just wanted to know how many posts you need for EACH level. Like Junior Villager, Villager, and all of the others. Thanks!

It is not only about postings, but WHAT you post. If you are looking for moving up the ranks, yup, I say you can do it. But it may not give you the much recognition in the Village, because it is not how much you say, but what you say that matters in the end.
Check out Pandora. She has the maximum postings in here, and a hell a lot of them are very informative. That counts!
