The PRG is doing new research on Paranormal Beliefs of Ghost Hunters and Paranormal Investigators. We are looking for both individuals who are and are NOT Paranormal Investigators / Ghost Hunters to take this survey. It’s open to everyone. It is completely anonymous and the results will be presented on their website (paranormalresearchgroup.com) and/or in a published paper within the next year. Your help with this project is greatly appreciated!

The survey can be found here:

Interesting. Kind of fun. It also makes you think a bit.

Any citizen suspected of independent thought shall be detained pending a deportation hearing."

" We are looking for both individuals who are and are NOT Paranormal Investigators / Ghost Hunters"

That's pretty much everyone..... but if you only advertise on paranormal sites it would skew your results a wee bit.

It's all pretty simple. If you have never experienced paranormal activity you can't in your heart of hearts really know/believe it exists. If you have experienced paranormal activity you can't in your heart of hearts really know/believe it doesn't exist.

and yes, i took the survey. :)

Yes, the survey was posted and sent to other places and not just paranormal sites. So far 57% of the respondents indicated they were a Ghost Hunter/Paranormal Investigator and 43% indicated they were not.

Actually, the published data would indicate that belief can drive experience and the other way around as well, experience drives belief. And of course all of this can be affected by environmental conditions, context, need, societal influences, psychological influences, demographics, etc. I also know people who have never had an experience who are true believers and those who have had many experiences that still do not believe. Irwins Causal Model of Belief takes a lot of this into account and much more (development of belief, moderators of belief, triggers of experience, outcomes of activated beliefs and experiences and shows there are different categories of paranormal belief such as black magic and parapsychological, which is similar to the distinction made by other researchers of Traditional Paranormal Beliefs and New Age Philosophy).

I wish it was simpler and I used to think it was, However, the more I look into it and research it the more interesting and complicated it gets.Posted Image Posted Image

I completed the survey. One issue I have with it is terminology. For instance the term spirit or ghost comes up. The question becomes what are each? To different people the word ghost may mean different things. It may even relate to how one perceives it. In my research I have heard descriptions of aliens that sound a lot like full body apparitions. Might it be how the witness relates to it? A technological person may see aliens while those of a spiritual bent may see a ghost. Right there the problem becomes evident. If it is alien then no death or afterlife element may be involved. But to the traditional ghost theorist that is the core of their belief. Truth lies in the middle; we really don't know what we are dealing with, the jury is still out.

I will be interested in how others believe though. Good study for us all.

Thanks for taking the survey. The questions are from a prior peer reviewed published study and question set with good internal consistency. Changes in the wording could possibly affect the internal consistency so obviously I left them alone.

I am working on the analysis right now. Hopefully I should have it done within the next few weeks.
