Not entirely sure where to ask this, but here goes. Mom's been watching Ghost Adventures on DVD with me, and has been wondering about EMF fields and the wireless network both here at home and at work. She was curious as to whether or not having the wireless internet boxes on would put off an EMF field that would make us think/feel like we're having a paranormal encounter. It's been pricking at me as well, since we've got them in every classroom at work, and I've noticed seeing more things out of the corner of my eyes in the hallway since she brought it up. Thanks in advance for any info!

That is a very interesting question. I wish I knew more about that stuff to help you with your question. I'm still trying to figure out how to work my cell phone...lol.

lol. Join the club. I'd like to get a smartphone, but hesitant because I'd either break/destroy it by dropping it on the floor repeatedly or dunking it in water at work, or screw it up somehow using it. So far, I'm still using a flip phone.

That would be a question for caverat on here; he appears to know a lot about the electronic side of the paranormal, and in a commen-sense manner as well.

There have been numerous studies made and to date none have conclusively proven that EMF from cell phones is harmful. But then again one can also question whether that could change as new data is reviiewed. As for me I would say that no harm can come from limiting exposure just as a safety factor. If later data finds nothing harmful you certainly haven't hurt yourself by keeping expose down. And if it turns out that a harmful effect is noted you are ahead of the game by taking prrecautions.

Cell phones have what is known as the SAR, (Specific Absorbtion Rate) This is a factor that measures the amount of EMF radiation absorbed by an individual while using them. The higher the number the greater the risk. A reference article is found here at http://reviews.cnet....diation-levels/

Personally we have all how dependent some get on cell phones / smart phones / other electronic gadgets. They are on them constantly, sunup ro sundown. Some get so engrossed in it they do stupid things that wind up getting them injured or killed. (i.e. texting while driving, walking blindly into the path of a truck while yakking away, or even getting a case of carpal tunnel from excessive texting or game playing.) In short, problems caused by over use. Thus reigning in the excessive use of devices of this nature could be helpful in other ways besides just lowering exposure to EMF!

In conclusion a few calls or a bit of use is likely not harmful to your health. But constant use can be, in more ways than just EMF.

It's not my phone I'm wondering so much about, it's Wifi internet routers. We've got them in every classroom at work, and that's what's got me wondering. Personally, I do try to keep my phone usage to a minimum.

The routers would be less of a threat than cell phones. All transmitters generate EM Fields by nature. These fields are measured in microvolts per meter, with the strongest point being at the point of transmission. Radio waves then begin to dissipate as the distance from the transmitter is increased. This follows the inverse square law of physics. Without going int all the details, suffice it to say that as distance is doubled the field strength of the EMF is reduced by the square root of the original. Thuis each time the distance is doubled the field strength is one fourth the previous reading.

The issue arises with cell phones because the antenna is only inches from the head when the phone is in use. Wifi transmitters on the other hand may be located several to possibly 100 feet away from the people in the room. Thus even though the transmitters may put out a similar level of EMF the distance means that the signal encountered by those in the room will only be a fraction what a cell phone user encounters. And since to date there is definitive harm proven for the cell phone user I would not be concerned in the least for Wifi transmissions unless you were sitting right on top of the transmitter. And if you are it should be a simple thing to move it a few feet away if it is a concern.

Good. So it isn't the routers. But could be my phone, even if it's in my pocket 95-98% of the shift.
