Perhaps "spirits" is a bit too limited. What proof do we have that what we are dealing with has anything to do with spirits? As such perhaps if we expand our reach we might find that what is "out there" may have nothing at all to do with dying / afterlife. Then we might find a completely new way to communicate using a broader perspective.

I like that CaveRat2. You but made this a little more interesting. Thats a more open way of thinking as far as communication with the paranormal goes.

I get that feeling that there is "something/someone" near me at times, when it happens (and if I am alone) I tend to just talk to "it" just like I would a living person. I do not tend to get an answer back in the sence that somebody speaks back but I do get a kind of reply in the way of a mood swing in how I am feeling.

(Given that such things exist in this context) I think the best way to communicate with spirits, ghosts, or any other paranormal entity is different from person to person and also different depending on what type of entity you're dealing with. Some people claim success just speaking aloud. Others employ various tools such as automatic writing to facilitate communication. Historically, mediums would use an intermediary spirit guide type entity to assist in the communication process with human souls who have crossed over. Modern researchers claim various forms of ITC, especially EVP, works well for them.

However, as a general rule, I think its safe to say that one should start with an open mind...and clear and positive intentions. Really examine WHY you want to communicate and what you expect to get from that communication...and whether or not you're ready for whatever does (or doesn't) come through.

And even though there isn't any hard evidence to back it up, I personally believe that most communication back to us is done very symbolically, as opposed to a direct communication. How many times do people see a butterfly, or hear a certain song on the radio and automatically think of a deceased loved one? Sure, its likely to be a coincidence or our minds simply employing apophenia...trying to make connections that aren't really there...but I think if a certain object or event automatically triggers such a strong emotional urging that its a sign from a loved one, then we should give it some thought, especially if it comes at a symbolic time (anniversary, when we're thinking of THEM, when we're depressed/scared and NEED that communication, etc.)

On another note, I was always told growing up that DREAMS are the ideal medium for communication with the other side. Our minds are in another, more relaxed, state of consciousness. It's like we're more open...and more willing to allow the communication to occur since its more acceptable...we can always just say it was a dream, lol.

Both CaveRat and Theresa hit upon the dual sides of my questioning. My physics teacher wife has explained to me the possibility of different dimensions of time existing parrallel to ours, which then brought about the idea of potentially communicating with someone existing in a time dimension that has alread passed in our dimension. So would it be that a person from your past who has died and appears before you in person, or in a dream, is existing as a spirit or as a solid body in an alternate dimension? And then there is the extraterrestrial angle, of which I admittedly don't follow closely at all.
When considering only the spirit angle, it seems that there are SOOOO many ways a spirit will try to attempt at some sort of communication, whether verbal or symbolic. A friend feels that whenever she sees a ladybug that it is a message from her ladybug-loving daughter who is deceased. In my line of thinking I believe that is stretching it, but I would never tell her that. If that is what helps her cope, then so be it.
The only forms of communication I have utilized is just plain, out-loud speaking and voice recorder, with no success with either on my part. Oh, well. And as far as I can recollect, I have heard voices from time to time, but just in sinlge word snippets, though I did have someone or something breath in my ear earlier this year as I lay in bed trying to decide if I wanted to get up at the moment, so I was awake when it happened. I thought it was my dog, but she wasn't in the bed with me at the time.

when I get that "feeling" of something/someone near me I just talk. sometimes, very rarely, I get an answer. I have had this all my life (46yrs so far) and I think of it as a one way telephone call, they can hear me but I rarely hear them. You cannot "push it" it just happens. Thinking about it perhaps if you disconnected your phone and put it to your ear when this happens you might get something. I might even try it myself.

Spirit communication is different from person to person so to say.
Being the "way I am", I hear and see and I am able to communicate back and forth. (let me tell you I feel kinda nuts sometimes) But over the years I have learned in teaching others, that the best way is to listen to the first thing that comes to your mind as you ask questions, they are usually the correct answers.
This helps you open up your mind to the correct channel so to speak. Most people will second guess what they hear and then dismiss it. Our minds hear all sorts of things like that "little voice" we hear. This is the same place spirits will speak thru, but you do have to listen to that first thing you hear. Learning this type of seperation is really easy. Some folks will dismiss this also or take it too far all together and make it more than what it really is.
When I have worked with paranormal groups as a "consultant" so to say, I speak outloud everything I hear. Once the history of the location is done after, they find I did hear many things that were exactly correct to the location and said spirit in the home ie. owners, events and deaths etc.
For the most part, the feeling of someone behind you is usually our guides. They can be family members to total strangers, they may have some sort of past connection to us. This is hard for many to understand. When people ask me to read for them, I am not a "fortune teller", I am there to guide people for the most part. Family members come in to talk most of the time, they tell me things that may have something to do with what is going on in the clients life and perhaps where to take that. I always first discribe the person I am talking to and they give me something in connection to this person that they will understand who this person is. Sometimes the name comes in very clear, not that I always hear the name, but I see letters of the name also. I have had clients ask me things about why do they feel things like they lived in another time, for example, the client asked why she was so drawn to the "Holocust"? I could see things about her that told me of her past life. As I described these things, she realized this was the exact feelings and weird dreams she has had over the years. It finally gave her meaning in this life. The one crazy part of this read for her was to tell her husband something, I asked if he was open to this, and she said for the most part no. He arrived just as I was about to leave and I got pushed into telling him something from his father and blew him out of the water. Later she told me he understood and was quite amazed.
I don't do this for money ever, this is not what I am about. As I tell people, this is a gift, it is to be given back the same way. I am here to help if and when someone needs it.
Learning to understand the otherside is important, it is not a TV show or to make money. It is also not something you can just read in a book and understand it and then go about like you do. There are the TV shows that are so way out there to give thrills about the otherside. They see things they way they might interpet them and give the client so called advice. The whole show can be such a huge build up to capture the viewer by the producers. I have had emails from TV shows and this is what they are looking for! (I sort of nicely tell them off that it doesn't work that way) I find this quite irritating. I can go on but I think I better stop, for now...lol.

I wish I could be receptive in that manner, leslie. What you just explained runs in my family to a certain extent, but I believe I'm too logical-minded to allow my mind to relax in order to be even the least receptive. I am amazed and impressed with the ability in others, but can't find it within myself, if it even exist within me.

I hear you on that one. I still use my logical mind...lol...but I find myself using my gifts a lot in one way or another too. I have to sort thru things on occassion, sometimes the feeling of not making sense with something that comes thru and I feel the need to debuck it so to say. Usually I'm right with what I feel then too!

Understood. Even with my lack of ability, I still have experiences to varying degrees that keep me interested, I will talk to a room from time to time, just in case there is someone or something there and acknowledge their potential presence. As long as they don't get in the way of the tv, we're good.
