now i've heard that most monster or ghost stories are based on some kinda of real life thing. like dracula based on vlad the impailer or elizabeth bathory. they called her the blood queen. she killed over 600 young women and bathed in their blood as a perverse kind of form fountain of youth....anybody else know of any stories like this?

And Sasquatch is thought by some to be a sort of missing link, Giganticus Pithicus (sp?) a species of ape thoght to have died out in prehistoric times.

The short story The Body Snatcher is based on a real doctor from eighteenth century Scotland. He did purchase cadavars from grave robbers to do scientific research. It was the only way one could conduct autopsies as the prevalent Christian edict was that even in the name of science, disection was a desecration of the body. The doctor was eventually hanged.

And if I am not mistaken, Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson was also based on this doctor. I know that the author got the idea from a criminal case at the time.

I've not heard much about the body snatcher before but i've definatly read up on Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde being based on some doctor from victorian times.

I hadn't heard that before, Kats. I always read that Mary Shelley was at a lodge in Switzerland with her lover, and another couple, and when the weather turned bad they decided to have a contest to see who could tell the scariest story. She won and told them that she dreamed the whole thing. I never knew that it might have been based on something real.
