I suddenly realized that I did not exactly describe what I had seen correctly. The red ring I had seen was not around the outer area of the moon. It was a blood red ring around the Inner edge of the moon. I have been looking into the night sky for almost 40 yrs. now and I have NEVER seen this. :rolleyes:

Ice crystals in the upper atmosphere can account for a lot of reflection also an indication of cold weather or snow . I saw a moon dog once that had me wondering. This is a smaller version of the moon close beside the regular one, again ice crystals. I think some people feel that this sort of thing is meant just for them and not the hundreds of thousands of other people that see the same thing.

something else that just occured to me, and I know this from experience, some factories discharge pollutants after dark so people won't complain when they see a dense smoke like fumes coming from their stacks.

I saw a ring around the moon one night when I was living in Georgia, and then I came back in and told my mother that the next day it would snow. Lo and behold by the next afternoon, it was snowing.

The ring around the moon is a refraction of light from ice crystals in the atmosphere.

here in the Ozarks it's called 'blood on the moon', it's a bad omen.
