Hello everyone,

Just found this site and find it all very interesting. I was reading today they plan to break down all the ruins of old Western State very soon. ( http://www.cityoflak...ect-update.html ) Very sad to see it go; hopefully something will come up and they will not destroy the landmark so many of us have grown up with.

I have found some good sites about old Western State, but still cannot find some good pictures of what the hospital (Hill Ward, by the lake) used to look like. Anyone have some? I plan to go to the ruins in the future and take some pictures before they are gone. Here are the only two pictures I have of the old Hill Ward of Western State:



*This one looks like it was taken from the site of the new (one they still use today) Western State hospital. Notice the tunnel in the lower part of the image. I believe that that is the tunnel which runs under Steilacoom Blvd. today (but fixed up now, and much nicer.)

So anyone have some old pics of the Western State Hill Ward? Anything would be greatly appriciated!

My daughter's high school is right across the street and the new hospital area is very well populated. They have a tour that goes through the old hospital area.

Western State Hospital now has an exhibit room on the grounds of the hospital of artifacts and images from its 130 years as a state asylum. Tours are by appointment only. Call the WSH Patients Library to schedule a tour @ 253-756-2593

western state hospital is not haunted and there is about 6 abandoned buildings on the property. I have been twice and photographed it twice. I don't see how you think it is haunted.

Also it is in staunton VA. I think you may have the wrong asylum lol

This entire thread is about Western State Hospital in Ft. Steilacoom, Washington (pretty much Lakewood). The ruins of the Hill Ward are located in Ft. Steilacoom Park and the new Western State hospital is located across the street.
Personally, I do NOT think it is haunted, nor do I believe in ghosts or the boogyman anymore than I believe in Santaclaus. Could there be something 'super natural' out there? Maybe. Is it at the Hill Ward? No.
Remember, if you go somewhere looking to see 'something', you usually will. Take everything with a grain of salt.

But again, in response to 'Staunton, VA', I am not sure which asylum you are talking about, but not the same one as me.

    We weren't there but a few minutes when strange sounds began coming from all around us.  Though they were faint, we all heard them.  I wont lie, we all became "Prime Grade ChinckenBAD_WORDs" and decided that we all heard nothing but we were gonna leave anyway.  I believe "Mutual Boredom" was the reason.  When we reached for the car doors is when things really got strange.  My flashlight wich although millitary has never failed me,  Even in FT Lewis rain, and yet now it was out.  Becoming increasingly firghtened we all quickly hopped in the car and planned on getting out of there when a loud cry began that sounded like it was coming from right outside the car, and slowly moving forward.  The four of us were sitting completely still in utter horror when my friend mike told me in a not so calm voice, to "start the BAD_WORDing car BILL!"  
      Needless to say we left there leaving tracks where the car once stood.  On an occasion when the subject comes up, the guys and I have agreed that what we heard was not our imagination, was not something we created out of fear, but that of someone in dispair, crying........  I never went back and neither have my friends.

LOL this is so funny! i was acually LMAO as i was reading this articel! i do go there ALOT! i have taken maky pictures there as well. i havent been up the hill to it in a few months and im told they have started to take it down now! i just dont know why they would do this! it is kinda relazing to walk up the hill and snap some shots n look around! we didnt however hear anything it was day light every time we went but some was night when we left. we plan on going this weekend adn taking more pics..WE JUST LOVE IT THERE! i guess coming from a person who finds it relaxing to walk the cemetarys belongs in western state some would say LOL..crazy as it may sound IM NOT ALONE!
my brother once went there him and his girlfriend at the time was walking around the lake area when he cam upon a little girl in a white dress..he began to walk towards her and ask her where her mother was..she vanished!! he said he was so darn scared!! hell id be too!!! YIKES! iv seen ghost before and to tell you the truth its rather scarry! ya i know..i know...i walk the cemetary how could i be scared of a ghost!! LOL well it takes some getting use to...anyhooo you should go again when your in town with yr boys!! seriously..you have to make it a 2nd trip...its well worth it!

There is a Western State Hospital in Staunton, VA...but there are numerous 'asylums' around the nation with the same name.

I went here today, there is really nothing left but the stairs. They've removed absolutely everything else.

I live right near there. When I was younger my mother took us to an abandoned place here in WA. Can't remember where it was. But, it was terribly scary. I thought it was that hospital. Maybe I visited the old one. But, I can say with all honesty...I did not like being in that place. I was young and we were all alone...uggh.
