Could the name "Booger" or "Booger Man" have been shortened to "Boogeyman"?

I had always figured that was it, seems by far the most likely source, probably the source of the Southern term 'Booger' as well. ( In Welsh, 'w' can be a vowel like the 'oo' in 'book'.)
