Using that guide, 1337 spells "Leet" which is short for "Elite". You are elite if you understand 1337.

"1337 haxr pwns u" ( "leet haxor owns you" ) basically means that some (self-proclaimed) elite hacker is better than you.
Another common rule is to use "ph" in place of "f". "Phreak" originally meant someone who could hack the phone system.
