Dear Ghostvillagers,

It's the first newsletter of 2006 -- and we're looking forward to an amazing year of supernatural research and spiritual exploration here in the Village!

For those of you who have been with us for a long time, you might have noticed evolution happening. Our little village has grown in size and scope, and in 2006 we're going to take things a step further. Many of you already know us as a great online community, and others know us best as a Web portal, full of research articles, interviews, and opinion pieces on the subject of the supernatural. In 2006, we're going to add "online magazine" to our description. Each month, our newsletter will kick-off a new subject theme for the coming month. What makes our online magazine different than your traditional publications is that our magazine will be a living, breathing, and growing publication. If you have some thoughts on the subject; we want to hear about it. Share your comments in our board of the month or write an opinion article for our features section. A portion of our homepage will detail where you can find all of the topic's content. At the end of the month, we'll create an archive for each topic. We hope you'll be a part of our community, portal, and magazine!

I'd also like to mention that no matter what topic we choose, Ghostvillage.com will still be the place for all supernatural and ghostly discussion. The monthly themes are not a replacement, just another new addition.

Starting today, and running until the next newsletter, our theme of the month will be tarot. Tarot cards were first invented sometime between 1420 and 1440 C.E. in Northern Italy, purely as a card game for noblemen. Originally called carte da trionfi (cards of the triumphs), the decks were elaborately painted with Medieval and Renaissance artwork, and the game played with them was similar to our modern game of bridge. After about a century, the name of the deck and game evolved to tarocchi to distinguish it from a newer game called "triumphs," which was being played on the standard 52-card deck that arrived from Europe prior to the carte da trionfi. The background of the word "tarocchi" remains a mystery, but the German form of the word is tarock, and the French is tarot.

In the late 1700s, tarot started to be used for more esoteric uses -- fortune telling, guidance, divination, and even spirit communication. Today there are many hundreds of different decks in use today with new designs and concepts being published regularly. For some, the fascination with tarot is simply the artwork, and for others, it's a spiritual tool. What does tarot mean to you?

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Monthly Contest
Congratulations to Anthony Feller of Lehighton, Pennsylvania, who was last month's winner of an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's new book, The Nightmare Encyclopedia: Your Darkest Dreams Interpreted, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

This month, we're doing the contest again, but we ask that you first click this link: http://www.ghostvillage.com/index.shtml#winner. If it says, "The search is on" then we don't have a winner yet and go ahead and send in your answer. If you see today's date and "We have a winner!" that means you weren't the first to email us. Sorry, please try again next month.

On to this month's question: This question can be answered by reading a page on Ghostvillage.com. The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer will win this month's prize.

What is the last name of the family in Connecticut that was featured in the television documentary: A Haunting in Connecticut?

Once we have a winner, we will announce it on our home page as soon as possible. Good luck! (Only Ghostvillagers who have not won a prize from us in the last year are eligible.)

This month's prize: We're giving away an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's book, Communicating With the Dead: Reach Beyond the Grave (which includes a section on tarot), a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

Who's Who in the Town Square?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>eemal<< - member since December 5, 2004

What is your name?
Erika

How old are you?
33

Where do you live?
Now, the southeast Texas coast (south Houston)... previously, France and England.

What do you do for a living?
I do lots of things... My husband Sandro and I have our own business stretching artists' canvas (www.houstonartistcanvas.com). I am an artist, writer, and palm reader/intuitive. I have been studying holistic nutrition (for humans and animals) for the past 4-5 years. I have recently taken up teaching French on the side.

What got you interested in ghosts and the supernatural?
My mom and my great-aunt on my dad's side. My mom is a sensitive, and all women on my dad's side are psychics or healers. My great-aunt Margaret and her sisters used to read tea leaves and palms. The psychic influence of my family has resulted in my mom and I living in several haunted houses.

How has the supernatural influenced your art?
I paint surrealism -- mostly very colorful and odd situations that come from psychic images and out-of-body experiences.

What is your favorite movie of all time?
That's a tough one, but if I had to pick one of the top favorites, it'd have to be The Others -- just because it reminds me of growing up with my mom and my always asking her how we knew if we were dead or alive. I was a weird kid. Though my favorite book is: The Dead Are Alive by Harold Sherman or The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks.
