Dear Ghostvillagers,

I just finished reading a translation of a classic -- Dante's Inferno (also a good name for a band). This was one of those tomes I blew off in college and finally got back around to reading. The epic poem was penned around 1306 by Dante Alighieri and details the author's perception of the many layers of Hell, what punishments await specific sins, and who the author believes we'll find in some of these layers. Dante tells of corrupt politicians from his hometown, popes who abused their power, and other local businessmen and gangsters of the day who all get their comeuppance in some horrible way.

I got this book from my local library. The elderly woman working behind the counter gave me a cock-eyed look when she saw what I was checking out. "I just want to figure out which layer I'll be spending eternity in," I said. She didn't laugh. Maybe she didn't think the afterlife was something to joke about.

Dante's Inferno is a great work, full of vivid descriptions of torture, humility, and deep sadness. Many modern-day religious perceptions of Hell can trace their roots to this work. "All hope abandon, ye who enter in!" Dante writes of the sign hanging over Hell's entrance. The poem is a work of fiction -- purely the author's creation based on a few scant Bible passages and some mythology -- yet religious leaders have embraced Dante's macabre and awful vision of fire and brimstone, demons poking the damned with tridents, and the fallen angel Lucifer in a lake of cold, dark ice presiding over the underworld. Ask a preacher what Hell looks like and he'll likely paraphrase from Dante.

Great stories are powerful. They can be retold so many times that they go from fiction to folklore and even to fact for some people. Time travel is critical to researching the supernatural. We need to go through history and find the earliest instances of every quirky legend we hear. The truth is back there somewhere. And speaking of great stories, this past month I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Hans Holzer. In regards to the supernatural, the man has practically seen and done it all. Be sure to curl up with this one when you have a few minutes.

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Monthly Contest
Congratulations to Maureen Smith of Crestline, California, who was last month's winner of an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's book, The World's Most Haunted Places: From the Secret Files of Ghostvillage.com!

This month we're trying something new. In previous newsletters, we hid a winner icon on one of our pages and the first to find it won the prize. Considering we now have hundreds of pages, this contest seems less fair. So we're going to make it easier. Here's a question that can be answered by reading a page on Ghostvillage.com. The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer will win this month's prize.

What was Hans Holzer's uncle's dog's name?

Once we have a winner, we will announce it on our home page as soon as possible. Good luck! (Only Ghostvillagers who have not won a prize from us in the last year are eligible.)

This month's prize: we're giving away an autographed copy The World's Most Haunted Places: From the Secret Files of Ghostvillage.com!

ATTENTION Paranormal Investigators
This is your last chance to be a part of one of a first -- a directory of haunted places and paranormal investigators from all over the world. This is the last month to get involved before this giant book goes to the printer. If you are a paranormal investigator/ghost hunter, either in a group or solo, please get in touch with me right away.

I'd like to involve as many investigators as possible. This is your opportunity to have your work, your name, and your organization's name published in a book that will be on the shelves in 2005. Please email me for more information at: info@ghostvillage.com.

-Jeff Belanger

Who's Who in the Town Square?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>lulaboo<< - member since September 28, 2004

What is your name?
Heather Conner

How old are you?
31

Where do you live?
Muncie, Indiana

What do you do for a living?
Housewife and mother of four spoiled kitties.

Have you ever seen a ghost?
Yes. My husband and I had an urge to do some sky watching earlier this year and we ended up going to my favorite cemetery to do so. About half an hour or so after we arrived and settled ourselves to watch the stars, my husband cursed for some reason and I suggested he apologize to the residents for his rudeness. He apologized, resumed his stargazing, and I decided to have a quick once-over at the cemetery to make sure all was well. It was then that I witnessed a vague grayish human torso-shaped figure moving toward the direction of some nearby trees. The sighting lasted for a few seconds until the ghost hid behind the trees. (And for once -- me without my camera!) But it was a neat experience -- I wasn't scared at all. The ghost was probably wondering why I wasn't running around trying to take pictures as usual.

What's your favorite TV show?
Honestly... I forgot what TV is since I've become a villager! But otherwise Mythbusters.

Finish this sentence: In all my life I've never seen a poem as lovely as a...
sunrise over the Smokey Mountains in Autumn.
