Dear Ghostvillagers,
Who are the Celtic people? Who are the Druids? These are two questions we're going to explore this month on Ghostvillage.com.
The generally accepted Celtic nations are: Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Spain -- it's from these regions that the Celts emerged as the predominant culture between 900 and 500 BCE. There is evidence of the Celts around Europe before 900 BCE, and the tribal groups certainly didn't stay only in these regions, but these were the times and places for the height of the culture that was eventually driven into the shadows by the conquering Romans between 100 BCE and 100 CE. The religious leaders of the Celtic peoples were the Druids -- a special group who were recognized and respected among the various Celtic tribes. They were the keepers of the magic.
The Celtic mythology and magic was never completely wiped out. I recently read the March issue of National Geographic magazine, which chronicled Tom O'Neill's journey to discover people who still spoke the Celtic languages and still celebrated some of their holidays. Today, Druidism and the Celtic culture are experiencing quite a renaissance. Many people who practice Witchcraft or Wicca will recognize that some of their holidays such as Beltane and Samhain, as well as many rituals and rites, come from the Celtic traditions.
No culture is ever completely conquered or wiped out. As tribes and peoples mix, so too do their ways. If your family heritage ever passed through Eastern Europe, there can be little doubt that Celtic influence is still with you. Ever bob for apples at Halloween (or even celebrate Halloween for that matter)? Ever put up a Christmas wreath made of evergreens? You may be more Celtic than you realize.
To explore the topic in depth, we have a special treat and a Ghostvillage.com exclusive. We're running an excerpt of Dr. Brendan Cathbad Myers's forthcoming book,
The Mysteries of Druidry in four parts. The book is being published by New Page Books in May of this year. Part one is up now. The excerpt will no doubt raise some questions and spark a lively conversation in our
Message Board of the
Month. Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.
Supernaturally yours,
Jeff Belanger
